Find Norwegian banknotes and coins on eBay

The First National bank of Norway

To my best knowledge, Norges bank was the first and only national bank of Norway. I was therefore suprised when I found on eBay a note from "The First National Bank of Norway".

It turned out that this was a note from the town of Norway, in Michigan, US.

A National Bank was a bank that was granted a charter that made it possible for the bank to issue notes up to 90 percent of the value of government bonds deposited with the federal government. More than 14,000 banks were granted this right to issue notes.

Five of these banks were "National Bank of Norway"s:

  • The First National Bank of Norway, Iowa
  • Norway National Bank, Maine
  • The Norway National Bank, Maine
  • The First National Bank of Norway, Michigan - Home page.
  • The Farmers National Bank of Norway, South Carolina
